ITIL ® Version 3 Exam Tips

A question I’m continually asked is, “How do I both understand and answer Foundation Level exam questions?” The front page of the exam says there are no trick questions, but you might find some “tricky” ones.

I recommend the following approach to answering questions and staying clear:

Assessing the Exam Question:
o    Circle key ITIL words (such as “Problem” or “Service Portfolio”)
o    Circle key question words (such as “NOT” or “INCORRECT”)
o    Determine what part of the Foundation course are we talking about

  • Generic topic, Lifecycle Stage, Process, or Function

Assessing the Exam Answers:
o    Circle key ITIL words (such as “Problem” or “Service Portfolio”)

o    Circle key answer words (such as “always” or “never”)
o    Use a process of elimination

  • If key ITIL key in the question and answer do NOT match, then this is most likely a weak answer
  • If key words seem unreasonable (such as “the Service Desk always handles Events”), then this is most likely a weak answer

o    The Answer that is most likely the best answer is:

  • The one with the LEAST amount of weaknesses
  • The one with the MOST correct usage of key ITIL words

Other Exam Tips:
o    Don’t get flustered or stuck on questions that are unclear. Place a check mark and come back to it. Often, other there are other related questions that may jog your memory
